8 Helpful Squarespace Updates

In this post I’m rounding up some updates that Squarespace has made so far this year. These updates save time and improve the performance of your website, so your website can be the dynamo your business deserves!

The regular improvement of the Squarespace platform is just one of the reasons why I use Squarespace. Unlike Wordpress or WiX, Squarespace is an all inclusive platform that takes care of all the maintenance for you.

Often, the folks over at Squarespace perform updates to the platform so it’s users - that’s you - can get the most from it. Everything from website security to new features gets a review. For busy small business owners, many of these updates become real time-savers.

Take a look at what’s changed so far this year!

1. Reusable Images

Instead of uploading the same image over and over, Squarespace has made it possible to reuse images that have already been uploaded to your site. To access a previously uploaded image, first open an Image Search window, and then navigate to the Imported tab.

You’ll find your image there, and can now quickly grab it and reuse instead of searching for it on your computer. Yay!

2. The Acuity block is now the appointment scheduling block

Previously a bonus feature, the Acuity Block has been renamed to the Appointment Scheduling Block. This block can still be found where it once was so, there’s no changes there. In fact, this one is only a change in name, so no wondering where it has gone; it’s still there but with a different name.

3. Hide Pages from Search Engines

Need to hide a page from search engines like Google or Bing? Squarespace added an option to hide a page, or a collection from search engines.

To hide a page, navigate to the SEO tab of the Page Settings. Then check Noindex. Previously, to hide a page, Code Injection had to be utilized. Now, no more.

Note that checking this setting does remove the page from your sitemap.

4. Export Sales Data

For all the eCommerce folks out there, Squarespace made it easier to download sales data, so now you’ll be able to import data to your own accounting software, easy peasy!
The sales data downloads as an Excel file and organized by credits, charges, taxes, and even payment processor fees into different tabs.

5. Image and Quote Block Animations

Looking to zhoosh up your image and quote blocks? Well, now you can add a little animation to make things more eye-catching. Depending on the block, a new Animations tab will appear in the block editor. Options below:

Image Blocks - the entire block can be animated. If the block includes text, the text and the image can animate, separately.

Quote Block - the entire block can be animated.

6. Default Blog Post URL Format

This is probably my favorite update of them all. This super blogger friendly update has made SEO easier and URLs more specific.

The default blog post URL format no longer includes the date by default. Instead, the new format includes only the site title, blog title, and blog post title. Here’s an example of how that might look:

Note, this update only affects new sites. If you created a site before March 13th, the blog will still default to the old style - date included. However, I’ve got a fix for that! You can check out how to remove dates from your post, so you can create Evergreen content, right here!

7. New Image Editor Features

The image editor got a redesign, too! It features some nice editing options so you don’t have to leave your Squarespace site to place flawless photos on your site. The enhanced image editor features both image filters and adjustments for sharpness, blur, highlights, and shadows.

8. Post-Submit Redirects

Have you ever wanted to personalize the page that appears after a form is submitted on your site? It’s even easier to do this now with Post-Submit Redirects. You can find this feature in the Forms menu under the Advanced tab.

Now, your site visitors can receive a personal, branded message from you instead of a generic one, automatically. To create your own page, consider using a Cover Page. You can learn how to create one, here!
